Daily Prompt: Ghost

The ghosts of our past haunt us every day. We see them in the reflections that stare back at us – our mother’s eyes, our father’s smile, our grandmother’s high cheekbones. We hear them in our turn of phrase, our accent, our pitch and tone of voice. We live them through our facial expressions, our sense of humour, our familial idiosyncracies, our mannerisms and personal habits.

We carry the genetic whispers of our ancestors deep within us, often without knowing from where our particular preferences originate. Each of us is in part a kaleidoscopic mosaic made up of tiny remnants of all the colourful characters that have gone before, a million sparks of spirits past glinting delightfully in the heart and soul of each new generation…

I really liked this! “Each of us is in part a kaleidoscopic mosaic made up of tiny remnants of all the colourful characters that have gone before” puts a different twist of the concept of ghosts.

It makes me think of a recent story. This past weekend I was at a reunion and ran into a man I haven’t seen since we were very young kids. I would never have recognized him, but what I did recognize was that he had a small laugh at the end of each sentence whenever he talked …. EXACTLY LIKE HIS MOTHER!!! She died many, many years ago but I always remembered that little quirk in her speaking pattern. He has it too! … a ghost of his past.
