Daily Prompt: Craft

I remember while I was studying for my degree (BA in Psychosocial Studies) visiting the Women’s Library (at that time housed in London Metropolitan University), and one outstanding thing that struck me above all else about the women’s suffrage movement in the early 20th Century was the sheer subversiveness stitched into the beautifully crafted campaign banners made by suffragettes.

These well-educated women had effectively organised and utilised their ‘feminine’ skills en masse to create such intricately embroidered symbols of solidarity, with the sole intention of standing up collectively for their right to vote as independent politically active people against a decidedly male-dominated society that required them to excel at beautiful-to-look-at decorative needlework…

    My sweet husband’s great-grandmother was one of those ladies, Ruth. A tiny dynamo escorted by her six-and-a-half-foot husband to make sure no one messed with his beloved.
